Some photographers use software to correct color balance and alter images. Lifestyle Photojournalist Suzy Simons prefers to explore the world and paint with light.
Suzy uses photography as an extension of her experiences. She has an innate ability to frame unique perspective into what others may see as mundane. Suzy’s eye has been honed through years of personal study and practice in the field. Her journey as a lifestyle photographer began with childhood inspiration.
“As a youngster I spent a lot of my time studying National Geographic and Life Magazine and was very attracted to the journalistic approach to photography. That combined with my love of art and light have had the biggest impact on the lens I view life and photography through.” Suzy remarked.
The images on the magazine covers she observed were bold and powerful, they told a story, and brought the event or moment in time to life in a way no other media had the ability to. Suzy connected with this form of expression and has passionately pursued the study of photography throughout her life. She acquired a Fujica SLR camera in the late 80’s and began to tell stories through her lens. Her ability is a symphony of gifts, exploration of technique and an endless drive for knowledge and improvement.
As a coach, she learned to react instantaneously and to anticipate shots rather than waiting for them. Suzy is constantly practicing and adjusting her skill set both in her personal and professional life which has allowed her to gain expertise in wrapping light and shadow around her subjects. As she captured images of people she discovered her ability to read a subject’s demeanor and translate a sense of the individual into her images. This innate ability to read her subjects and express their personality through organic poses is something Suzy has come to be known for. Her business, Vision Photography, has grown over the years thanks to the impassioned word of mouth her clients give her.
Ms. Simons will be showing a collection of her favorite photographs from throughout her career. Her travels and outdoor explorations have allowed her to create some truly profound images. One such image was captured after the 2013 Yarnell Hill Fire in Arizona. The image features a home which was nearly completely consumed by the flames. The only structure which was left standing in the home was the chimney and hearth. In the ruin a bright blue chair, nearly untouched, sits gravely near the hearth in the ashes of a home which once stood around it.
Come explore the powerful images hanging in the Green Office Furnishings gallery during ArtHop Thursday, September 18th from 5:00 – 8:00 PM.
Suzy Simons work will also be exhibited mid-September by the Madera Arts Council.
