Each of her creations is an experiment in color; Hue, shape, intensity, and brightness are each introduced into the experiment purely to create the response they elicit. Each piece is a communication meant to reach the viewer on both conscious and unconscious levels and envelop them in the energy of the colors at play. You can find her powerful paintings in various private collections throughout California, Boston, New York, Chicago, Atlanta, and the UK.
Maries discovered her gift and passion for painting as a child and continued to develop her skills throughout her teenage years. As she painted she would become enthralled with her work and was known to miss meals as she created uninterrupted for hours on end.
Peacocks were one of the first subjects that Maries would study through her work. As a young woman Maries explored this particular subject literally hundreds of times. Perhaps it was this bold and brilliantly colored avian muse that sparked her lifelong love of color and artistic expression.
As a pediatrician Dr. Joseph cares for the developing youth of our community. She is board certified in pediatrics and genetics and is a part of several exciting studies aimed at helping Valley children suffering from asthma breathe easier. Maries serves as Medical Director of SJV Children’s Health Environment Study, Pediatric Asthma Clinic, and the Early Childhood Asthma Program. She also educates the next generation of physicians as a clinical professor at the UCSF Fresno Department of Pediatrics.
Maries’ extensive education and medical background have provided her a keen insight into the body’s physical and psychological response to color. She is fascinated with the interaction between color as a stimulus and its effect on individuals. For example, a room painted a hot color like red may cause someone to feel anxiety, whereas a room painted a cool color like blue may have the opposite effect and calm the individual. The hue, brightness, and intensity of a color also affects the way it is perceived and thus the emotion it creates in the viewer.
Dr. Joseph explains, “Perception of color is very personal and subjective, but its effects are universal. I believe energy from colors has the ability to touch one’s physical, emotional and or spiritual states however brief that effect may last.”
